The number of people affected by diabetes in the European Union (EU) 25 is projected to increase to 26 million by 2030, up from the 19 million currently, according to the 2005-2007 American Diabetes Association figures. In the US, the numbers are more startling. About 24 million people in the US live with diabetes, which is about eight percent of the population.
