Overweight women with low levels of the hormone adiponectin prior to pregnancy are nearly seven times more likely to develop gestational diabetes, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published today in the journal Diabetes Care. Adiponectin protects against insulin resistance, inflammation, and heart disease.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), namely DHA and EPA, have been linked to a 35-percent lower risk of cardiovascular death in older adults and may also benefit people of all ages, according to recent scientific research. This includes helping reduce brain damage in infants after stroke, increase math scores in teenagers, and boost memory in young adults.
