Time to Stop Taking Iron

Women accustomed to taking iron supplements may want to stop when they hit menopause. Too much iron can up a person’s risk of heart disease, liver cancer, and, according to a new study, Parkinson’s disease. It’s best to get no more than the RDA, which is 8 milligrams a day, the amount in a cup and a quarter of cooked spinach. —Neurology, June 2003
