There may be a big reward for all those tears—strong-flavored onions could be better than mild ones at fighting cancer.
In a recent lab study, extracts of particularly eye-watering onions, such as New York Bold, Western Yellow, and Northern Red, significantly slowed the growth of colon and liver cancer cells—while mild, sweet onions like the popular Vidalia had little effect.
The difference may be that the strongest-tasting varieties had six to 11 times the amount of antioxidant flavonoids and phenolic compounds that sweet onions do.
So, though your friends may shed some tears if you get too close, keep eating those bolder varieties.
