MSM for Pet Joint Health

By Rodney Benjamin

Our pets need activity in order to stay healthy and happy, but sometimes the onset of aging gets in the way. Supporting overall joint health is one of the key ingredients to maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle as we grow older, for both humans and pets.

Oxidative stress plays a significant role in the origin and development of arthritis. Free radicals and a class of compounds called inflammatory cytokines cause damage to connective tissue and cartilage which can lead to decreased mobility, hindering our ability to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. Controlling oxidative stress can protect us and our pets from joint-related issues that may lead to premature aging and negatively impact overall quality of life.

Recent studies have shown that a compound called methylsulfonylmethane (MSM for short) reduces oxidative stress. MSM is not a direct antioxidant like many superfruits and vitamins C and E, and therefore will not neutralize free radicals—instead MSM works by minimizing the body’s production of free radicals.

MSM has been widely used in human joint formulas to increase freedom of motion and decrease the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Now there is strong additional evidence suggesting that this powerful supplement can have a greater preventive and supportive role. Bergstrom Nutrition makes PurforMSM (“pure form MSM”) a feed-grade MSM and a well-known staple of the companion animal and equine care and performance industry.
