Green Living: Birds!
Birds calling and dashing about enliven any backyard. Here are a few ways to roll out the welcome mat:
If you add a birdhouse, place it in the shelter of a tree away from predators and facing away from prevailing winds and precipitation.
Feed the birds year-round to enjoy summer visitors too. Birds are more likely to visit a feeding station that provides quick escape to nearby trees and shrubs as feeding stations in the open leave them more exposed to predators.
Birds need water as much as they need a food source, so consider installing a birdbath. If you do, put it in partial shade and change the water frequently to prevent harmful bacteria from building up.
