Aromatherapy can help fight stress, lift your mood, and alleviate aches, pains, burns, and even cellulite. How does it work? “Essential oils vaporize very quickly from warm bath water and the molecules enter the nose and lungs, enhancing deep breathing and also entering the limbic system, where mood changes take place,” says Penny Price, head of the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA). “Usually the relaxing effect is instant.”

The key is to choose a scent you like: orange, lavender, rose, sandalwood, palmarosa, and ylang ylang are popular. Lavender is good to encourage sleep, but go light, Penny says, just four to eight drops in a warm bath. If you’re looking for an energizing effect, try citrus oils.
