Drink Your Veggies!

Add an abundance of fruits and vegetables to your diet
By Paul Tarbath

Do you want to eat healthfully and supply your body with an abundance of nutrients so that you have enough energy to see you through the day? Then start incorporating green smoothies into your diet!

Drinking smoothies will allow you to eat significantly more healthy fruits and leafy green vegetables—doing so will promote great nutrition and assist your body in its natural detoxification and health restoration. Smoothies are full of fresh fruit and vegetables and have a highly alkalizing effect on your body, thereby promoting better health. The vitamins and minerals abundant in plant foods are all-important in keeping your body healthy and free from disease. All the natural fruit sugars will keep you going for hours and eliminate thoughts of snacking in between meals. Natural weight loss is another positive, as well as the relatively low cost of the smoothie due to the often simple list of ingredients.

When my wife and I started incorporating green smoothies into our diet, we noticed many health improvements as well as increased energy levels. In fact, green smoothies helped us transition to a low-fat, raw, vegan diet, which we have been following since mid-2009 and has helped us to reverse many diseases we used to suffer from.

For those of us with busy lives, smoothies are a great solution to our food needs as they are quick, easy to make, and highly nutritious. Smoothies are actually even healthier than juices, because juicing removes the fiber, and fiber is vital for our bodily health. Fiber promotes healthy digestion and regular bowel movements, as well as stable blood sugar levels and natural weight loss.

The first step you can take to incorporate smoothies into your diet is to replace your regular breakfast with a large smoothie made with fruits and green leafy vegetables. If you exercise first thing in the morning and then drink your smoothie for breakfast, you will feel energetic and full of life. A few hours later have another smoothie before your lunch. Only your imagination limits what culinary delights you can conjure up. Try mango, peach, and baby spinach; pineapple, blueberry, and arugula; banana and lettuce; strawberries, mangoes, and celery—the number of wonderful, tasty combinations you can make for yourself is endless.

In our line of work as raw food nutritionists and lifestyle coaches, we recognize the great value smoothies have in promoting healthy eating and nutrition and always recommend them to anyone wishing to transition to a healthier diet. One of our favorite smoothie recipes, which is available on our website, is a “green banana” smoothie. It is very simple to make, calorie-rich, alkalizing, and abundant in minerals. Simply blend together six to eight medium ripe bananas, one head of lettuce, two stalks of celery, and 1/3 to 1/2 cup of water until the consistency is smooth throughout. Enjoy!
