Celebrate Fair Trade

By Katy Neusteter

Millions of people around the world work grueling 10-hour days, live in constant fear for their safety, and never know if they’ll see a nickel of compensation. TransFair USA, America’s main third-party certifier of fair-trade goods, guarantees that food products bearing its label meet strict production and manufacturing criteria—workers have been paid fairly, labor conditions were safe, and a percentage of revenue has been invested in community development. October is Fair Trade Month, so choose Fair Trade Certified bananas, cocoa, coffee, cotton, flowers, honey, rice, sugar, tea, herbs, vanilla, and wine. And since TransFair USA doesn’t currently certify nonfood items, trust these resources for ethically sourced jewelry, clothing, beauty products, and more: A Greater Gift (serrv.org); Global Exchange (globalexchangestore.org); Ten Thousand Villages (tenthousandvillages.com); and World of Good (worldofgood.ebay.com).
