Sure, a cup of hot cocoa is the perfect post-sledding, skating, or skiing drink—but it’s important to remind your kids they need water, too, says Brooke de Lench, author of Home Team Advantage (HarperCollins, 2006). Since it’s easier for kids to remember to drink up when it’s hot and they’re covered in sweat, they may need some nudging when it’s chilly outside.
Here’s how much they need and when.
|WHEN TO DRINK||AGES 6 TO 12||AGES 13 TO 18|
|1 to 2 hours before sports||4 to 8 oz||8 to 16 oz|
|10 to 15 minutes before sports||4 to 8 oz||8 to 12 oz|
|During sports (every 20 minutes)||4 to 8 oz||8 to 12 oz|
|After sports (within 2 hours)||24 oz||24 oz or more|
