I’m writing this blog so you all can remember me as who I am today: happy, healthy (for the most part), and satiated. Come tomorrow morning, you might not recognize angry-famished-monster-me, for I will be starting a 10-day cleanse in which pizza and Thai takeout are not allowed. This particular cleanse, brought to us by our friends at Purium Health Products, is based on the idea of a “superfood” diet. The cleanse includes: >>The Power Shake – 3 shakes daily >>Super Amino 23 – 5 tablets daily >>Apothe Cherry Juice – 1 ounce before bed, daily >>Super Lytes – 3 tablets daily >Super CleaseR – 4 tablets daily   The makers of the cleanse claim that participants will see a result of up to 20 pounds of...

If you’re an early gym-goer like me, you know that the struggle to wake up before the sun is completely, totally real. My alarm chimes at 4 a.m. every morning; the sound is familiar—part of my daily routine—yet I can find so many excuses to stay in bed, snuggled in the sheets and pillows and blankets, for an extra couple of hours.                                      For example: I’m exhausted. My shins hurt. I have an ingrown toenail.                                      Or: It’s Monday. It’s Friday. However, despite these excuses, I still manage to get up...

GMO: You’ve heard the term in the news, in passing with friends and family, and as you’re browsing for food in the grocery store; but what does it mean? A genetically modified organism (GMO) is, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “an organism whose genome has been altered in order to favor the expression of desired physiological traits or the output of desired biological products.” By the genetically engineered process, the organism is modified to “enhance” it for desired qualities such as insect, herbicide, fungal and viral resistance, as well as improved taste and storage. In order to create such a plant, the organism’s genetic makeup is altered by adding a different gene—sometimes several—into a plant’s original...

Below, P.D. Kai Swigart, PhD, MFT—better known as Dr. Kai—offers Part I of a five-part series of guest blogs that will address holistic health and healing.   Throughout human history, the vibrations of chants, mantras, and hymns have been known to possess physical, mental, and spiritual healing properties, as have the vibrations of cosmic color rays. These rays are most effectively accessed through specific gems worn as rings or pendants, used as elixirs, or projected on the body by gem light machines. The adjustable frequencies of vibrating light, along with the focusing lenses and filters of gem light instruments, allow us to more optimally transmit the potencies of these cosmic color rays to the body. The system of knowledge most...

Herbal supplements have the ability to provide a whole host of benefits—from boosting energy to aiding sleep, from enhancing memory to supporting the body’s many complex functions—but if you’re quick to reach for the off-brand bottle of your desired herb, you might want to reevaluate before you head to the checkout. Maybe you’ve seen the story—but if not, here’s a quick rundown: On Monday, New York’s attorney general’s office accused four major retailers of selling sham herbal products marketed under the respective store’s in-house brand name. And I’m willing to bet these four national chain stores are where many of us do our weekly shopping: Walmart, Target, GNC, and Walgreens. Popular herbal supplements—including...

Did you know that a heathy heart beats more than 100,000 times per day? Our body contains approximately six quarts of blood, which are circulated through the body three times per minute. In only one day, blood travels 12,000 miles! But our heart is often an organ we take for granted—that is, until we experience a coronary event. But once this happens, the damage has been done. Fortunately, modern medicine has made heart repair routine. Valve replacement, pacemakers, and vascular stents are only a few of the procedures allowing doctors to heal the heart. But regardless of all this technology, prevention is the best way to approach issues of heart disease. Following a heart-healthy lifestyle is key. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you do just that: 1. Eat a variety of...

As we round the corner toward 2015, many of us will vow to be healthier—and here’s what you can do right now to prepare. Last summer I undertook a one-month smoothie regimen, during which time I discovered how delightfully delicious a daily smoothie can be. Then, when I attended Natural Products Expo East in September, I had the pleasure of sampling the new Vega protein. I was hooked! When I asked where I could find the protein powder in stores, I was told the company was actually in the process of reformulating to make it even better, so I decided I would wait for the new formula. Shortly after September, a giant box full of Vega goodies arrived on my desk. Inside was the new Vega One All-In-One Nutritional Shake, and, of course, all of us here at the office had to have a...

Last month, I shared a circuit routine to tone your chest, butt, and core. To shake things up, I’ve created a total-body toning routine that incorporates both cardio and strength-training supersets—in three separate circuits—because I know you didn’t have just one piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, and because of course you had to have a second helping of sweet potatoes. Disclaimer: I’m not judging, I’m just glad I’m not the only one experiencing this well-deserved food coma. Although I performed this routine on Tuesday—as part of the holiday prep, if you will—it’s also a great way to kick your workouts back into gear after all that delicious indulgence. So if you’re looking for something to do this weekend and you...
