Herbal supplements have the ability to provide a whole host of benefits—from boosting energy to aiding sleep, from enhancing memory to supporting the body’s many complex functions—but if you’re quick to reach for the off-brand bottle of your desired herb, you might want to reevaluate before you head to the checkout. Maybe you’ve seen the story—but if not, here’s a quick rundown: On Monday, New York’s attorney general’s office accused four major retailers of selling sham herbal products marketed under the respective store’s in-house brand name. And I’m willing to bet these four national chain stores are where many of us do our weekly shopping: Walmart, Target, GNC, and Walgreens. Popular herbal supplements—including...

Did you know that a heathy heart beats more than 100,000 times per day? Our body contains approximately six quarts of blood, which are circulated through the body three times per minute. In only one day, blood travels 12,000 miles! But our heart is often an organ we take for granted—that is, until we experience a coronary event. But once this happens, the damage has been done. Fortunately, modern medicine has made heart repair routine. Valve replacement, pacemakers, and vascular stents are only a few of the procedures allowing doctors to heal the heart. But regardless of all this technology, prevention is the best way to approach issues of heart disease. Following a heart-healthy lifestyle is key. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you do just that: 1. Eat a variety of...

As we round the corner toward 2015, many of us will vow to be healthier—and here’s what you can do right now to prepare. Last summer I undertook a one-month smoothie regimen, during which time I discovered how delightfully delicious a daily smoothie can be. Then, when I attended Natural Products Expo East in September, I had the pleasure of sampling the new Vega protein. I was hooked! When I asked where I could find the protein powder in stores, I was told the company was actually in the process of reformulating to make it even better, so I decided I would wait for the new formula. Shortly after September, a giant box full of Vega goodies arrived on my desk. Inside was the new Vega One All-In-One Nutritional Shake, and, of course, all of us here at the office had to have a...

Last month, I shared a circuit routine to tone your chest, butt, and core. To shake things up, I’ve created a total-body toning routine that incorporates both cardio and strength-training supersets—in three separate circuits—because I know you didn’t have just one piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, and because of course you had to have a second helping of sweet potatoes. Disclaimer: I’m not judging, I’m just glad I’m not the only one experiencing this well-deserved food coma. Although I performed this routine on Tuesday—as part of the holiday prep, if you will—it’s also a great way to kick your workouts back into gear after all that delicious indulgence. So if you’re looking for something to do this weekend and you...

Looking to indulge in some chocolate goodies this holiday season? Seventh-generation cacao farmer Joseph Montgomery reminds us to be smart when choosing our treats. He partners with small farmers in South America to harvest all-natural, non-GMO cacao to create Suavva, juicy superfood smoothies that feature cacao as the main ingredient. Before deciding what to treats to eat this season, consider the different health factors of cacao, cocoa, and chocolate.  We have all seen, heard, or read something about cacao being a superfood laden with health benefits. But what’s the difference between cacao beans, cocoa, and chocolate? Are they all beneficial to our health? The answer is no—not all forms of cacao are created equal. Here’s why.   Raw Cacao Bean...

Every year, many Americans fill their homes with the savory smells of a roasted turkey, yams, green beans, stuffing—and I haven’t even gotten to the pie. But when you’re walking up and down the aisles of the grocery store trying to select which products will best suit you and your family, do you stop at the sight of a USDA-Certified Organic label? Or do you go straight for the 15-pounder priced at $12.99? You may be asking yourself if it’s worth it to buy an organic or free-range turkey, or organic produce, so I’m here to tell you: it is. Let me explain. Although an organic, free-range turkey can often be more than six times (6!) the price of a “regular” turkey, that “regular” turkey has lived most of its life in a crowded cage with...

My blog this month has very little to do with health. Rather I am fascinated by how much influence Thanksgiving has on our American culture. I am not talking about the economic impact of black Friday kicking off the holiday shopping season, I am talking about Thanksgiving. According to the US Census bureau over 230 million turkeys will be raised in the US in 2014, with about 20% of them consumed on Thanksgiving. Over 850 million pounds of cranberries will be produced in 2014, with about 20% of them consumed on Thanksgiving. Nearly 2.5 billion pounds of sweet potatoes will be grown in the US in 2014, this growing superfood is a staple for almost every traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And don’t forget pumpkin pie, we will consume fifty million pumpkin pies, a million of which will be...

Looking for a new workout that will torch major calories while building muscle? I created the following circuit routine this morning (at 4 a.m.—yep), and I’m still feeling energized and motivated. Try it for yourself to tone your chest, butt, and core—all while burning fat and boosting your heart rate! Bonus: This workout is super easy to customize. Tailor the exercises to fit your skill level, and experiment with swapping certain similar exercises for others. This simple customization allows you to get a different workout each time you do the routine, even if you follow the basic template multiple times a week. In turn, you’ll more fully tone your muscles and prevent your body from plateauing.   You’ll do 3 reps of a cardio-weights routine, followed...

I’ve never had long, luscious locks. As much as I’ve tried to grow a thick, lengthy mane—and believe me, I’ve tried everything from hair pills to frequent haircuts to no haircuts—my hair grows to a point slightly past my shoulders and then abruptly stops, no matter my efforts. It’s not that I have bad hair; I just have exceedingly normal hair. As I’ve previously mentioned, part of my job is to test personal care products and recommend my favorites to readers. Beauty products have really begun to stack up within the last few months as natural health companies have submitted to our Beauty With a Conscience Awards, the winners of which will appear in our December issue. So, rather than head to Target for my beauty supplies, I’ve instead taken...
