More evidence that probiotics may be helpful in treating eczema surfaced this week in a study published in the journal Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. Researchers examined whether probiotic supplements could prevent allergy-prone infants from developing eczema, or atopic dermatitis, a skin condition characterized by dry, flaky skin, and redness. For the study, 112 pregnant women received a daily probiotic supplement six to eight weeks before delivery and continued supplementing six months after delivery. Another group of women received placebo. Breast-fed infants in the probiotic group were significantly less likely to experience eczema than the babies of mothers given placebo.
