Improving Your Skin’s Health Naturally

Inside-out and outside-in solutions
By Holly Lucille, ND, RN

As a naturopathic doctor, I work with patients with a wide range of health conditions. I have found that many symptoms of these conditions can be reduced or reversed by helping people improve their overall health, which often includes a change in diet and lifestyle. A particular example of this is conditions of the skin. I often find that issues like poor diet, bacterial and yeast imbalances, and other influences that cause low-grade inflammation can express themselves in the form of psoriasis, dermatitis, and acne.

Inside-out skincare

Making improvements to diet, lifestyle, and the intestinal milieu by working from the “inside-out” helps skin improve dramatically. This is a far different approach than conventional medicine, which usually focuses solely on “outside-in,” often via topical solutions that have serious side effects and don’t always get the job done.

That is not to say working from the outside-in when it comes to skin issues is bad. In fact, often the irritating, itchy, unsightly, and inflamed symptoms are best treated through outside-in solutions, but only if those solutions are clinically safe and effective. Thanks to current advancements in technology and research and development, there are effective outside-in botanical topical solutions that can help find quick relief from the various symptoms of skin conditions, such as itching, flaking, and scarring, without the harmful side effects.

Incorporating outside-in solutions

My colleagues and I have received a strong demand from both patients and providers for safe and effective natural skincare solutions. Many organizations and companies have heeded the call and developed some amazing products. These organizations bring together the power of nature and modern scientific technology to extract the right herbs to benefit the skin.

For example, I have a female patient who has had chronic follicular keratosis, which caused little red bumps on her arms, legs, and buttocks. When we first started working together a couple years ago, we were able to make some significant improvements by cleaning up her diet and ridding her of yeast and bacterial overgrowth she was experiencing. Because of her lifestyle, she wasn’t always able to keep to a strict regimen, which meant she experienced a more chronic condition and occasional flare-ups. To combat these flare-ups and provide safe, natural symptom relief, I turned to a clinically proven herbal solution.

She continued to do her best to abide by the inside-out program we had developed, but adding this outside-in approach created the perfect synergy solution for her skin condition.

Why herbal solutions?

There are many topical skincare products available in the dermatological world. However, many of these products have steroids, parabens, or other chemicals that can potentially harm the body more than help it. While these steroids and other chemicals may help increase the skin’s absorption of the medication, the side effects and long-term issues they can create can negate the benefits of rapid absorption.

Compare that to many of the current herbal skincare products that don’t have steroids, parabens, or harmful chemicals. These herbal skincare products have been clinically proven as safe, so they can be used for their intended purpose without the worries of harmful, painful side effects.

Even if you never experience the side effects of steroids or harmful chemicals, there are other issues associated with products that contain steroids. For instance, you may find that after only a couple of months or years you need to change to a new product to avoid potential problems with the steroids in your current product. This is something that can be avoided with herbal solutions. While it may take a couple extra weeks to see the effects of herbal products, you can experience the benefits for the rest of your life.

With this new information both patients and practitioners can benefit from the synergy of treating the “whole person,” both inside and out!
