Gluten has become a great concern for those with celiac disease. This autoimmune digestive disease interferes with an individual’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. Without a known cure, the only effective treatment is a gluten-free lifestyle.
Though problems are typically associated with food, some say to steer clear of skincare and cosmetics with gluten, as up to 60 percent can be absorbed into the body. Skincare and cosmetic companies like Lavera make sure their products are 100 percent gluten-free so celiac sufferers can use their products.
Other sources, like a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, say that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin and only poses a problem when it is ingested.
Unfortunately more studies will need to take place before any real evaluations can be completed. Those suffering from celiac disease or even gluten intolerance should take the precautionary measures in order to stay healthy.
