2nd Annual Beauty with a Conscience Awards
Natural Solutions puts its stamp of approval on 101 of the purest and best personal care products out there.
Written by Natural Solutions Editors
True beauty shouldn’t cost a thing. Sure, we spend serious money on luxurious lotions, lash-plumping mascaras, and shampoos that turn our hair to silk—but for once since this economic downturn, we’re not talking about dollars. When we say cost, we mean the toll unsafe personal care products can take on our health, our children’s safety, and the welfare of our planet.
By now we’ve all heard that everything from serum to sunscreen can be teeming with troublesome toxins and crazy chemicals, and many concerned consumers already steer clear of products made with parabens, phthalates, and synthetic scents and colors. But there are hundreds of lesser-known ingredients hidden in many favorite products—some with the potential to wreak havoc on the environment and others that have been linked to breast cancer. Without a universal—and enforceable—natural or organic standard to regulate the beauty industry, even companies claiming to be natural often produce products laced with not-so-clean stuff.
But our purpose here isn’t to discredit the non-natural or call out green wannabes (we cover that in "Faux Naturale?" on page 35). With our second annual Beauty With a Conscience Awards, we want to honor true beauty, to applaud companies that have created pure, natural, and nontoxic products that really work. And there’s no better time to name the Best in Beauty than October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Last spring, we invited hundreds of natural and organic companies to subject their best beauty offerings to our scrutiny. Lipsticks, lotions, scrubs, and shave creams poured in immediately, transforming our office into a full-blown beauty emporium. Tempted as we were to dig in and sample, we first had to break out the magnifying glasses to read through every single ingredient list, no matter how small the font. We were determined to make sure any product we’d even consider for contention first passed our rigorous definition of clean.
To assess product purity, we developed a strict set of standards using Natural Solutions’ Formidable 15 Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Skincare, Whole Foods Market’s Premium Body Care Standards, and the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep <a href="http://cosmeticsdatabase.com" target="_blank">cosmeticsdatabase.coma> as guides—along with a whole lot of diligent detective work. If an ingredient seemed iffy or raised questions, we cross-referenced, researched, and asked skincare and chemical-safety experts to determine not only whether that ingredient was acceptable, but why it was or was not passable. We won’t lie: This process was tedious—but it was worth every minute, as roughly 800 products proved clean enough to move to the testing round.
Then came the fun part. Our shrewd beauty brigade (aka Natural Solutions editors) set to banishing blemishes, lubing lips, soaking in bath salts, and treating tired feet to determine which clean products we couldn’t live without. With so many great entries, picking the winners wasn’t easy, but we’re proud to share with you what we’ve deemed the Best in Beauty.
