So Long to Soy?

Recent research brings disappointing news for women seeking a natural way to combat the effects of estrogen decline after menopause. In the year-long study of women ages 60 to 75, soy protein supplements seemed to have no beneficial effects on cognitive function, bone density or cholesterol
levels.

Earlier research has shown that soy may reduce hot flashes during menopause, but concerns have also been raised about its safety. Because soy acts like estrogen in the body, experts fear it may raise some women’s risk of estrogen-sensitive breast cancers.

So, is it time to put soy out to pasture? Supple-ments, maybe, but food, no. Tofu, edamame, and soy milk are great protein sources—too good to pass up.
