White Bread Step Aside There’s a new calorie king in town: sweet drinks. Soda and other sweet beverages now account for 14 percent of the average American’s diet. That makes these beverages the leading source of calories, a title previously held by white bread. In fact, 67 percent of people surveyed reported drinking three servings of soda or sweet drinks daily, according to researchers from Tufts University, who studied data from the 1999 to 2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
