Bottle of Youth

By Melaina Juntti

Mom and Dad told you to take your vitamins. Hopefully, you listened because new research shows that popping multivitamins may actually make your cells younger. In an American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study involving 586 women, the cells of those who took multivitamins had a younger biological age than those of nonusers. To determine biological age, researchers measured telomeres—the chromosome-capping DNA sequences that shorten as cells replicate and age—and found that those of vitamin takers were 5 percent longer. While the study authors haven’t deemed specific nutrients as must-haves for youthful cells, they observed a positive correlation between vitamins C and E and telomere length.
