Good news for stroke survivors: T’ai chi can help improve balance, which is key to preventing debilitating falls, says recent research. A Hong Kong study asked 136 people who’d suffered a stroke more than six months prior to practice either t’ai chi or various general exercises for 12 weeks. Researchers then tested the subjects’ abilities to keep balance when reaching, shifting weight, and standing on a lurching surface that simulated a crowded bus. Although the general exercisers showed moderate progress, the t’ai chi group demonstrated a significant improvement in balance. By keeping up the practice, study authors say stroke survivors can cut their chances of fall-induced injuries considerably. —MJ
