Supplement Watch: Thiamine

By Nicole Duncan

Vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine) may reverse kidney damage, says a new study in the journal Diabetologia. High blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels and prevent your kidneys from functioning properly—a problem many diabetics face. “In diabetes, the kidneys begin to ‘leak’ albumin (a critical protein in the blood necessary for transporting minerals and hormones in the blood stream) into the urine,” says Ryan Bradley, ND, founder of the Diabetes and Cardiovascular Wellness Program at Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Seattle.

“Thiamine helps kidney cells function normally and protects them against albumin loss.” Take 300 mg of thiamine daily to forestall kidney damage. —ND
