Run to Fight Hunger

By Nicole Duncan

If you can’t satisfy your hunger no matter how hard you try, crank up the intensity of your workouts. A new study from the UK says the more your routine gets you huffing and puffing, the less hungry you’ll feel. Why? You have two major appetite hormones: peptide YY (an appetite suppressor), and ghrelin (an appetite stimulator). Exercising always drops ghrelin levels, but if you want to suppress your appetite even more, make sure you’re breaking a sweat from aerobic exercise. The study only monitored treadmill activity, but you should enjoy the same benefits from 30 minutes of swimming, cycling, or rowing three times a week. —ND
