If you’re still not convinced that reading a book is any better for your child’s health than sitting in front of the tube, try this on for size (XXL that is): Fast-food commercials make up a full 23 percent of the food-related ads that we—and our kids—see on television. And a recent study published in the Journal of Law and Economics suggests that those ads may be contributing to childhood obesity, now epidemic in our country (according to the CDC, 33 percent of American kids are overweight or obese). The study showed that eliminating those ubiquitous fast-food commercials could reduce that number by 18 percent, and last time we checked, the Harry Potter novels didn’t run any Burger King commercials. —NS
