Q. I’ve heard that a poor diet can cause wrinkles. What foods should I avoid?

By Alan M. Dattner, MD

A. Stay away from excess sugar as well as highly processed and fried foods—all of which contain heat-altered proteins and fats known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs activate enzymes that destroy collagen, which gives skin its structure, and elastin, which helps skin resume its shape after stretching. The result? Sagging and wrinkles. Eat lightly cooked or raw foods, and supplement a healthy diet with vitamin C, green-tea extract, and vitamin E for further wrinkle protection. —Alan M. Dattner, MD
