Shower the Blues Away

By Lindsay Wilson

A new study reports that taking a short, cool shower once or twice a day might be just as effective in treating mild depression as mood-enhancing drugs. "Briefly cooling the body produces physiological effects similar to some antidepressants by increasing levels of dopamine and noradrenalin, chemicals that boost mood," says Nikolai Shevchuk, MD, author of the study published in Med Hypotheses. "Cold water triggers thousands of cold receptors on your skin to send electrical impulses to your brain, which acts as a kind of mild electroshock."
