A Weighty Issue

By James Keough

Australia’s not usually seen as a trendsetter, but it’s clearly ahead of the curve when it comes to overweight citizens. Standards Australia, a nongovernmental organization that establishes safety and design standards for products, plans to raise the load-bearing limit for toilet seats threefold, to more than 300 pounds. Committee member Steve Cummings told Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph, “If you’re going to sit on it, you want it to hold you.” To date, no one on the committee has said anything about making the seats wider.
