Common sense says being overweight would exacerbate osteoarthritis, but who would have guessed it would also make you more sensitive to the pain in your knees? A recent study at Ohio State and other universities found that clinically obese individuals (those with a body mass index between 30 and 35) had a lower threshold for the pain of osteoarthritis than more fit individuals, even after learning coping techniques that included progressive muscle relaxation. The researchers measured the response to pain objectively, using a slight electrical shock to the sural nerve, and subjectively with a questionnaire.
