The last time it happened was in 1948. That’s why it’s big news that a new vitamin has been discovered, this one by Japanese researchers. Pyrroloquinoline quinone, known as PQQ, plays an important role in growth and fertility in mice and likely does the same for other mammals, including humans. Scientists have known about PQQ for 20 years, but weren’t able to prove that it behaved like a vitamin, meaning that it helps a specific enzyme in our bodies aid growth and development. It will probably be a while before you can pick up PQQ supplements at the drugstore. In the meantime, you can find the vitamin in kiwi, papaya, and green tea.
