According to the World Health Organization, 285 million people worldwide are considered to be visually impaired. 65 percent are 50 years old or older. Here are some ways to prevent and ease the loss of sight:

>> Eat veggies rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A, such as squash and carrots.

>> Stick to rich greens like raw spinach and kale. These foods improve eyesight naturally as they add extra protection against sun damage.

>> Choose blueberries, huckleberries, and grapes; they contain anthocyanins, which improve night vision.

>> Add garlic, onions, and soy to meals to help prevent formation of cataracts and promote lens health.

>> And as always, use proper eye protection when exposed to the sun.
