Health Tips: Probiotics: De-stress Your Colon
Stress lowers levels of an immune system component called an inflammasome that is necessary to maintain normal gut microbiota. Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered that probiotics reversed the effect in animal models. Though stress does not cause irritable bowel syndrome, it does alter brain-gut interactions and can cause severe or chronic stomach pain along with a loss of appetite and diarrhea. “This study reveals an important mechanism for explaining why treating IBS patients with probiotics makes sense,” says senior study author John Y. Kao, MD.
