Health Tips: The Mindful Mother
Thanks to raging hormones, expecting mothers often experience an array of unpleasant emotions during pregnancy. In fact, one in five women go through major depression during these nine months, and many don’t like the idea of taking antidepressants out of concern for the safety of their baby.
Mindfulness yoga is here to save the day!
In a recent study, pregnant women who were identified as psychiatrically high-risk participated in a 10-week mindfulness yoga intervention and saw significant reductions in depressive symptoms. Mothers-to-be also reported stronger attachment to their babies in the womb.
Yoga, in general, is a great form of exercise, but many people omit the practice of being fully present and aware in the moment. Mindfulness yoga concentrates on this point and combines meditative focus with physical poses. It proves to be a powerful method to fight stress, boost energy, and negate health risks for both mom and baby.
