Health News: Pain is fleeting…

A recent study examined the three most common cognitive pain management techniques: acceptance, distraction, and cognitive restructuring. Acceptance disrupts the link between thoughts and behaviors so patients are willing to tolerate pain; distraction is intended to take one’s mind off the pain; and cognitive restructuring trains patients to alter their appraisals of pain to improve their ability to cope with it. The results? Acceptance led to increased pain tolerance, while distraction lowered pain intensity.
