Health News: DHA Supplementation

DHA, a member of the omega-3 fatty acid family, is one of nature’s most critical nutrients, playing an essential role in every stage of life. DHA makes up 97 percent of the fatty acids found in the brain and 93 percent in the retina. It has been shown to substantially boost memory performance in the 55-plus contingent—high levels of DHA have been shown to reduce dementia risk by nearly 50 percent. It also offers “neuroprotection” of brain tissue during inflammatory response.

Recommended as a supplement for expecting mothers, DHA leads to improved development of the brain, eyes, and spinal cord in the fetus, as well as passing on additional innate immunity protection to the newborn. It is also shown to optimize development of the brain, retina, heart, and nervous system in growing children. Mothers who took DHA during this pre- and post-pregnancy time period had children who, at five years of age, had significantly better attention spans, higher IQs, and better visual acuity.
